Program Scholarship and Grant History


Lyn Yarows Scholarship

Through the Lyn Yarows Scholarship, The Joan C. Banfield Foundation is committed to assisting Dexter female athletes by providing academic scholarships.

These scholarship athletes endured a rigorous process to be both considered and selected for this honor. They should be congratulated.

Since 2004, The Joan C. Banfield Foundation has contributed over $60,000 for equipment, training devices and college scholarships to dexter female athletes and organizations. The JCB has already committed another $30,000 over the next two years.

We thank all of our generous sponsors and volunteers for making this possible.


Programs Initiated by JCB

    Athletes in the Classroom:

    This annual event has members from the female professional mountain biking Quick Release Racing Team participate in a day long session with 5th and 6th grade students advocating and demonstrating the importance on good health, fitness exercise and education.

    Physical Fitness Motivation:

    Physical fitness motivation and recognition programs for P.E. classes 5th through 8th grade. The program provides "Toe Tokens" for students who achieve personal goals in their P.E. classes.

    Self Defense Awareness and Training:

    Self Defense Awareness and Training for local High School Area Females.

    HCM Heart Screening Program:

    Heart Screening for cardiomyophathy available to High School athletes in conjunction with Chelsea Community Hospital. See: Ann Arbor News Article from March 4th, 2008.

    ACL Injury Prevention:

    JCB is a partner with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital to provide female ACL injury prevention training to Dexter female athletes. Please read story that appeared in the Dexter Leader on March 6th, 2008.

    Improving Dexter Middle School Sports:

    Leading a group of non-profits that include The Athletic Booster Club of Dexter (ABCD) and The Educational Foundation of Dexter (EFD) to double the participation in Middle School athletics.

    Annual Scholarships:

    Each year, JCB funds annual scholarships for graduating female athletes from Dexter High School who has excelled in athletics, leadership and participated in younger female age groups for athletes.

    Annual Coaching Recognition:

    JCB recognizes a Dexter coach who has contributed the most to Dexter female athletics.

    Annual Volunteer Recognition:

    JCB recognizes a volunteer who has contributed the most to Dexter female athletics.

    Annual Sponsor Recognition:

    JCB recognizes a sponsor coach who has contributed the most to Dexter female athletics.



Grants Funded by JCB

    Softball Camps:

    • Financial support for softball hitting machine.
    • Computerized swing software.

    Speed and Agility Summer Camps:

    Summer camps for improvement of speed and agility for female athletes

    Pole Vault:

    JCB funded grants for the pole vault team for 16 vaulting poles for Girls Middle School and High School track teams

    Track & Cross Country:

    • JCB funded a grant for Cross Country uniforms.
    • Grant for a timing clock for the Dexter Women's Cross Country team.
    • A $2500 grant to help fund the construction of a new high jump pit for Middle School and High School track teams.
    • JCB funded 50 running watches for the Girls' cross country team.
    • JCB approved a grant for warm-ups for the Girls' cross country team.

    Weight Training:

    JCB funded a grant for weights specific to young women and girls for the Dexter High School weight room.

    Aerobics:

    JCB funded a grant for equipment and training materials for Dexter High School Physical Fitness classes.

    Tennis:

    JCB in conjunction with ABCD funded a grant for a new hitting back wall for the Dexter High School tennis courts.

    Swimming:

    JCB funded a $2500 grant ho help fun a new scoreboard to replace the old scoreboard at the Dexter Community pool.

    Little League:

    JCB funded a grant for $2000 to improve fields and make them tournament capable.

    Basketball:

    • JCB funded a grant for High School girls summer and AAU basketball uniforms.
    • JCB assisted in handling liability fees for the Dexter Basketball Club.
    • JCB financially supported High School Basketball team scholarships.

    Volleyball:

    • JCB assisted in supporting AAU players fees and scholarships.
    • New net system for Dexter High School volleyball team.

    Golf:

    JCB funded lessons for the Dexter High School Women's Golf team.

    Soccer:

    • Sponsored a local soccer player to play in an international friendship tournament.
    • Contributed to the purchase of new Dexter soccer uniforms.
